Contest Overview

Show your classmates, teachers, parents and future generations you really care about the sustainability of the world we live in by entering the 2010 America’s Greenest School ContestSM. How? Submit an entry explaining what you’d do if you were in charge of making your school a greener, more eco-friendly place.

Your entry can be in the form of a photo collection, music, a video, an essay, or photos of a diorama, collage or piece of artwork. But no matter what form it takes, it must tell the world how you’d make your school experience the greenest in the country.

We will choose the top 10 finalists, then all of America will be invited to vote online for the ultimate champion. Students of any age can enter (although a parent or teacher will need to sponsor students under 13 years of age). Group or class entries are also encouraged.

You have until March 8 to submit your entry. See full rules for all the details.

Summer Sanders

Who better to represent America’s Greenest School than a super-mother of two who lives and breathes a green lifestyle with every move she makes, who can swim like a fish, was an All-American at one of America’s top schools, and has a name that is a season? We’re proud to present (drum roll, please) Summer Sanders!

Take it from Summer, living a green lifestyle means incorporating eco-friendly steps both small and big into every day of your life. From recycling and shopping for locally grown produce to driving a hybrid car, Summer keeps her eye on the future of our world with all of the decisions she makes.

Summer Sanders is a legend in the swimming pool, having won three gold medals at the 1990 Goodwill Games, six NCAA titles, and two gold medals, a silver and a bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, to name just a handful of her achievements in the water. In 1996 she was honored as an ambassador for the US Fund for UNICEF. She also actively supports Right To Play.

These days, she can be seen on television, in magazines and on the Internet sharing her insights on sports, life for kids and the amazingly easy choices we can make that add up to a better life. But by far, the roles she is most proud of are mom (of a son and daughter) and wife (to her wonderful husband, Erik Schlopy, who just happens to be a three-time Olympic skier).

Summer’s mottos in life are: Enjoy the present, laugh at yourself and always remember that age is a state of mind. She looks forward to seeing all of the thought-provoking entries for the America’s Greenest School Contest!

Band

The Maine

You can be into global sustainability and still rock with the best of them! Just check out The Maine, the official band of America’s Greenest School.

Formed in Phoenix, AZ in 2007 while most of the band members were still in high school, The Maine turned their '90s radio rock band influences into an infectious pop-punk sound. Featuring singer John O'Callaghan, guitarists Kennedy Brock and Jared Monaco, bassist Garrett Nickelsen, and drummer Pat Kirch, The Maine signed to Fearless Records and released a five-song concept EP, “The Way We Talk,” in 2007.

It’s a rare thing to find an eco-friendly band that can sell out tours, have hit records, grace the cover of magazines and receive international acclaim within just two short years. It’s even more rare to discover one that can keep their feet firmly on the ground while they skyrocket to success, but The Maine is living proof that it can be done.

Fresh from co-headlining the recent sold-out Alternative Press Tour 2009, the Arizona quintet will be continuing its mission to subtly invade stereos and “ones to watch” lists across the globe with the digital release of the deluxe edition of their critically acclaimed album "Can't Stop, Won't Stop," featuring their new single "Into Your Arms."
